School's Open, Hide all the Children!

New sign in Winchester is sure to ruffle some feathers.

By Kat Kanning

Lauren Canario and Jim Johnson of Winchester have erected a new sign on their Ashuelot Street property. It says, “School's Open, Hide all the Children.” In a recent interview, Canario told the New Hampshire Free Press , “I put up the sign in solidarity with all the kids who are going to be locked up in public schools. They're forced to be there, locked up all day, drugged in many cases, told to sit down and shut up.”

Canario and Johnson are part of the Free State Project movement which aims to bring 20,000 small government types to New Hampshire. Many Freestaters believe that school is not a proper function of the government. Government, by its monopolistic, involuntary nature, is notorious for providing poor quality services. Education of children is too important to leave in the hands of government. So many Freestaters like the idea of using private schools, homeschooling, some even like vouchers.

The drugging that Canario referred to is the trend of schools encouraging kids to be placed on medications like Ritalin to keep them calm. See related article No Child Left Unmedicated
